Phonics for adults is every bit as important as it is for children. I teach adult literacy and have found, in almost all cases, that students have not been taught phonics adequately. Despairing adults often talk to me about the tragic impact of not being able to read and write. I was so concerned about this that it prompted me to create this website. I wrote this post when the original proposed content document was released. Here are a few that can be avoided by approaching phonics for adults with an open mind, a love of the language and high expectation that discouraged learners can discover a new way to get over lifelong barriers to reading and writing. There is lots to know about how the sounds of English are represented in writing. They need a tool that will quickly help them to read and spell. My worst-case scenario would have students being shown a letter and told what sound it makes.
Printable Phonics Worksheets
Phonics is a method of teaching reading skills that focuses on units of sound phonemes and their correspondence with written letters graphemes. For example, the phoneme at the beginning of the word "shoe" the "sh" sound is represented as a grapheme by the combination of two letters: "s" and "h. For adults to learn phonics effectively, they need to use a phonics scheme that is adult-centred, systematic and accurate. Obtain a reading program that is appropriate for adults, such as the "Sight Phonics" program or the online program "We All Can Read. Learn to identify the single-letter short vowel sounds "a," "e," "i", "o" and "u" and the sounds of single-letter consonants all other letters of the alphabet.
